Orleans Leader Sees Retail Cannabis Potential for Public Good

Many of those who recognize the economic potential of cannabis on Cape Cod, often cite programs for public good (real & hypothetical) that can be funded by adult-use cannabis tax revenue. However, rarely do we see town leaders doing the same.

Well, kudos to Andrea Reed for suggesting (2) powerfully good programs that the potential tax revenue could go to in Orleans: Universal Pre-K & Recreation Programs

“Retail Marijuana: Articles 37-38
If article 37 passes, I would like to suggest that the Community Host Agreement (which provides up to 3% of sales* revenue back to the Town) be used to fund Universal Pre-K for all Orleans families. We are one of the last towns on the Outer Cape to make this benefit available through vouchers or direct subsidy. That, along with a more robust recreation program and a potential new Community Center would help offset the high cost of housing so we can attract and keep residents of all ages.” - Andrea Reed

*A Polite Correction, Andrea: it’s 6% of annual sales revenue. Here’s the formula:

3% local sales tax (in perpetuity)

+

3% community impact fee (for min. 5 yrs)

= 6% annual sales revenue
